The number one reason that people use voice over IP is to save on call costs. Keep your existing phone line, and try Internet telephony! With any given VoIP service provider, you are bound to find rates to just about anywhere in the world at a fraction of what you would pay your local telephone company. And remember, calling other VoIP users is free!

Second phone line

Large families (or even small families with a teenage child), or people who run home businesses, often require a second phone line. Using your existing broadband Internet connection, you can use VoIP for a second line. Rather than having the expense of an STD call every time an employee in one office calls someone in another office, you can link all the PABXs between the offices using VoIP, giving yourself tie-lines over the Internet, such that employees can call other offices on their PABX extension, with the only cost incured being the Internet connection used for the voice traffic.

If you receive a lot of calls from a specific location, wouldn't it be nice if those people could call you for the cost of a local call? Now they can! With voice over IP, you can sign up for a phone number in a different location to where you are, and when someone calls that number, your VoIP phone will ring. For example, if you live on the central NSW coast, but have a lot of friends/family/customers in Sydney, you can get a Sydney phone number which would allow those people to call you for the cost of a local call! This arrangement can be very useful for a company that requires a presence in another city - perhaps a complete hosted PABX is not required, but some of the features of having remote phone numbers are. All you have to do is sign up for direct inward dialling, also known as a virtual number.

Keep your phone number while travelling
